It is a structural component of proteins and a precursor for the synthesis of the hormones serotonin and melatonin. These two hormones play an important role in regulating key body functions and are involved in controlling feed intake as well as the metabolism of proteins and fats. Tryptophan deficiency can significantly affect bird behavior and may lead to increased nervousness and irritability. Tryptophan is also necessary for the activity of lymphocytes and macrophages.
