Aquatic animals are species that live in marine and freshwater environments such as seas, oceans, rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. To thrive in these habitats, they have specific physiological adaptations that enable survival under aquatic conditions. They use different respiration strategies, most commonly gill respiration in fish and many aquatic species, while marine mammals rely on lung breathing, and some species such as eels can also use cutaneous respiration through the skin.
Aquatic animals can be classified in different ways, for example by habitat (marine vs. freshwater) or by locomotion, but the most practical approach is to classify aquatic species by their animal group (taxonomic group). Aquatic organisms include sponges, cnidarians, echinoderms, crustaceans, fish, most mollusks, some amphibians, certain insects, as well as reptiles, waterbirds, and aquatic mammals.
